Once upon a time I tried knitting…well, maybe more than once. I thought it had everything that would appeal to me. The wool (from the sheep I love) has wonderful varieties of color and texture. There is order to the step by step process and a pattern printed to follow as simple or as complex as desired. There’s a rhythm to the clicking needles and knitting is supposed to be a relaxing activity.
I thought, “How hard could it be? Knit one, purl two, it’s just interlocking loops of yarn right?” Wrong! I was dropping stitches and unraveling before I had even “cast on”. I discovered I had too many fingers, or maybe not enough fingers? My tension was too tight (in more ways than one) I wasn’t so keen on following a pattern either, maybe it was restricting my creativity? Hah!
So I decided I didn’t actually have a knack for knitting. Which really meant I was not willing to take the time, invest in learning, undo my mistakes, challenge myself and ask an expert!
Speaking of experts…have you seen the knitting of the One who is a Supernatural Knitter? His designs and intricate patterns are divine, complex beyond imagination and the capabilities of the human mind to understand. God is personally and perfectly involved in every stitch of creation. We see His handiwork in nature wherever we go…builders, and weavers and knitters. Every stitch has a specific meaning and purpose.
It seems God has given “knitting software” patterns to all His designs. Spiders knit webs together with perfect precision, perfect tension, and perfect spacing; a most amazing feat of architecture knit with strands of silk stronger than steel, withstanding a hurricane wind. Silk worm larvae spin silk and knit cocoons. Birds knit the most ornate nests with their beaks. Beavers knit with sticks to build their houses. The roots of oak trees knit with their neighbors roots to withstand hurricane winds. Bees and wasps change wood into soft pulp paper knitting their hexagonal cells. Muskrats knit with marsh grasses, squirrels with leaves.
Cathedral termites win the title though, for the tinest creatures knitting together the most grandiose structures. Their “cathedrals” can be over sixteen feet high and that is just the above ground ventilation system. The materials they use are mud, saliva and dung and the termite team can move a quarter of a ton of earth in a year.
All so outstanding and impressive, but here is the most marvelous and miraculous knitting of all! Psalm 139:13-14 “For Thou didst form my inward parts. Thou didst knit me together in my mother’s womb. I am fearfully and wonderfully made”.
That is so very intimate and personal. Every stitch in the Sovereign Hands of our Creator.
1 Samuel 18:1 says that God knit together the soul of Jonathan and the soul of David. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Colossians that their hearts might be encouraged having been knit together in love.
God is still very much in the knitting business. He desires that our hearts be knit tougher in love. HIS knitting has no dropped stitches, no holes, and even though there may be times in our lives when we feel we are unraveling, He can use that to knit an even more beautiful pattern.
Hearts, and souls and families and friendships…we should all be in the business of knitting as well! And sometimes we may even use wool!
It is so amazing to know that Jehovah God knit me together is such a special way that he could use me 8 years ago, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Not only has he knitted me together physically but also spiritually. He put people in my life so that I can grow and connect the yarn of my spiritual walk with Him. I look at the growth of a baby in a mothers womb and how God knows exactly what the child will look like and every aspect of their lives. Just so amazing.
